Two local residents, Kim and Kevin Radisewitz, moved here from Chicago to escape the Midwest winters and plan for their retirement. “We’re big runners and bikers and we compete in triathlons,” Kim says, “Delray is a good area for us to spend the winter, and we’re only a mile and a half from the ocean.” The Intracoastal Waterway separates the mainland from the beachfront. At night, the beaches are quiet and serene. In the mornings you’ll find runners, power walkers, pedestrians, and people walking their dogs.
West of the Intracoastal Waterway, Atlantic Avenue’s nightlife goes through the night and into the early morning hours. The restaurants and bars that line the streets have an open-air design to let the energy out into the open. Vic & Angelo’s is a favorite destination for their charred-crust pizzas. Linda Bean’s Perfect Maine Lobster Cafe is known for their lobster rolls.
In all, there are over 80 restaurants in the city that can cater to any palate. During the day you can also take advantage of golf courses, art galleries, museums, and cultural tours. Local parks also offer baseball diamonds, soccer fields, tennis courts, and swimming pools.
Miller Park, for example, has all of these sports facilities. Pompey Park is home to a $1 million dollar pool. Veteran’s Park overlooks the scenic Intracoastal Waterway as well. Richwagen’s Cycle Center on Atlantic Avenue offers bicycle rentals for those who want to ride down the street towards the beach and back.
Residents here enjoy a tropical rainforest climate classification. Summers are hot and humid, making the beach a necessity. Winters are warm and dry compared to other parts of the world. While everything here is amazing, it’s the beaches that make people stay for the long-haul. Travel Holiday magazine even named Delray Municipal Beach as the top beach in the southeastern United States.
